One of Sunraysia’s most highly-regarded leadership training programs is under threat, after the Victorian Government failed to renew its funding ahead of the November 26 election.
The Northern Mallee Leaders Program is one of nine regional Victorian programs designed to build leadership skills while also providing services to their local communities.
Similar programs exist in Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Shepparton, Gippsland, Warrnambool, Wangaratta and Horsham.
But despite the demonstrated success of the initiatives the Andrews Government has failed to guarantee funding for the next four years, meaning some programs are likely to be scaled back while others could face closure.
VRCLP Regional Leadership Chair and Committee for Geelong CEO, Jennifer Cromarty, said the programs helped build commitment and resilience, but security of funding was vital.
“There are certain programs in the smaller communities that are almost 100% reliant on this funding,” Ms Cromarty said.
“My understanding is that we will see some of these programs close if the funding isn’t announced.”
“We believe the government and the opposition are supportive of these programs so we’re really keen to hear if we can get an election commitment as soon as possible.”
Ms Cromarty said $10 million was needed to keep all nine programs operating for the next four years – or less than $280,000 per region per year.
Ms Cromarty says the ten-million-dollar price tag for four years is a bargain.
Ms Cromarty says it’s vitally important for regions.
