Landfill trial underway

A 12-month trial is underway to cover the Mildura Landfill tip face.

The city has currently been using soil to cover the rubbish to reduce the impact of litter and smell on nearby properties.

However the Mildura Rural City Council is trailing the use of bentonite clay which it says avoids the waste levy, but also the need to move soil to and within the site.

Up until now, like most local government areas, Council has been sourcing and using soil to perform this task, which attracts an EPA levy of $110 per tonne of soil applied to the tip face, as well as the need to purchase and transport the soil to the landfill.

It says it’s already showing signs of being able to effectively replace traditional soil.

The city says the 12-month trial will allow crews to look at all weather conditions over winter and summer.

It says that’ll provide the council with data needed on whether it can be a permanent measure.
