Croatians in Mildura

“As we all know, Mildura is a vibrant multicultural community with 79 different nationalities. Croatian community is one of them.

First Croatians settled in the Mildura region nearly 100 years ago.

Are you interested in hearing from them how Mildura looked like 75 years ago when they arrived? Did they really have to sleep under the bridge in first days upon arrival? And why they all gravitated towards Renmark, and not Mildura? Why for the first Croatian settlers fishing and rabbit catching was not a recreation? And what was it that eventually made Croatians leave Renmark and settle in the Mildura region and ultimately made them go from struggling for existence into winning top Victoria Awards for Agriculture?

You can hear all of this and much more if you join us for a screening of a documentary “Immigration Story of Croatians in the Mildura Region” on Sunday, 29th December at 4.30pm in the Wallace Cinema on Deakin Avenue. The screening is open to all. The price is 1 golden coin donation. The cinema has a lift access to all theatres.

This uplifting documentary runs for 55 minutes and is made by Croatian Senior Citizens Club. It contains personal stories of 16 Croatian community members about why and how they left the “old home” for Australia, and highlights experiences of their arrival, struggles and achievements in a “new home”.

Come and find out why those Croatians chose to immigrate to Australia instead to America and how they have helped shape our modern Mildura identity.”
