The CFA’s warned of hefty penalties for those who don’t conduct burn-offs properly. The CFA are urging local farmers across the Mallee to take extra precautions while burning-off ahead of the Fire Danger Period. Last year CFA responded to 819 callouts for escaped burn-offs between January and December with close to half of those happening in September, October, and November alone. Penalties for allowing a burn-off to escape during a declared Fire Danger Period can include fines up to $23,000 – 12 months prison – or both.
