A federal request to extend the timeframes to deliver the Murray Darling Basin Plan has been welcomed by local councils.
The Murray River Group of Councils, which includes Mildura and Swan Hill, says it is important communities impacted by the plan can be heard and listened too.
Federal Water Minister Tanya Plibersek is asking for an honest assessment on whether the plan can be delivered by a deadline of the middle of next year.
The Group of Councils says it does not support any further water buybacks from Northern Victoria.
Councils chair Rob Amos says the impact of the plan’s been significant for those who live in the north and north-west Victoria.
