Offence: 'Running' Amber Light?
Is it an offence to ‘run’ an amber light?
That was the question before a court in Mildura this week.
A 22 year-old probationary driver was booked by Highway Patrol officers for passing through the Deakin Avenue lights at Eighth Street while the lights were amber.
The Sunraysia Daily says the court was told the offence happened at 12:23am … and the car entered the intersection just as the light was about to change to red.
The Magistrate asked for a check on the road rules … as he was not familiar with that being an issue.
The court was then told it is an ‘offence to fail to stop at a yellow light unless it is unsafe to do so’.
While the charge was then found to be proven … the Magistrate dismissed it … saying there’d be no drivers left on the road if that rule was enforced every time.
Should the rule be changed?
