RACV are reminding locals how dangerous it is for kids to be left in cars ahead of what’s set to be a scorching week.
The city’s forecast to reach 35 today before climbing into the 40s over the weekend.
If the outside temp is 30, it can get up to 70 degrees inside a vehicle, with children and pets more vulnerable to heat.
In 2024 RACV received over 650 calls from parents and carers who needed help freeing children accidentally locked in vehicles.
RACV offers the following advice for motorists driving with children:
- Ensure windows are open before placing children in the car to prevent auto-locking, then close them once driving.
- Never let children play with keys.
- Minimise distractions when loading the car.
- Keep keys secure with a lanyard or clip.
If a child is accidentally locked in the car:
- Call 13 11 11 for RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance.
- For life-threatening situations, call 000 immediately.
- Stay calm, but act fast.
